i have an externad hdd for storing dvd movies and i can play it on a dvd player.. but when i tried to plug it in on the the dvd layer it cannot recognize it.. can anyone help me?

I HAVE AN HDD FOR SAVING DVD MOVIES FROM THE NET... IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I CAN USE THIS ON MY PS2?? IF POSSIBLE.. HOW?
