Thread: Help on pc connecting to car |

So.. im trying to connect a pc to my car and add a screen ... i dont understand how i can wire the computer so it runs off my car battery? also anyone know some good small computer to put like maybe under the seat |

I am looking to the exact same thing, I am going to use a laptop though and just detach the TFT screen and mount it in my car somewhere (Obviously extending cables from base to screeen and having cables covered properly) then just stash the base of the laptop under seat or something where i can reach easily and change songs, play DVD's etc. but there is still the question of powering it. You can get DC cigarette adapters for laptops but in my case I want to power it so as soon as i turn the car the laptop boots up. I've read it can be done. |

Have you tried to hook it up directly to the starter seitch of your car?

your talking about fiber channel, been around for a long long time. It wont hit pc's for a while since it costs alot to make good cables converters etc. The fiber optic used in home audio pales in comparison, usually most fiber cables for HA are actually plastic fiber and have the crappy toslink terminator. |

power inverter is one way to run off your car electrical system another way is to go with itx (pcs can be as small as a windows xp operating system box) the also have special power supplies that adapt to your cars 12 volt source no restarts etc. |

One of the best PC's to use in a vehicle are Small Form Factor or "Shuttle" PC's. You could easilly build one yourself by getting a barebone kit from directron.com |

get the mentioned above and stash it on the glove compartment. then just run the wire to the pc...simple as that |

Not sure this is possible but, I am looking for some type of adaptor that would allow me to plug my pc into my car in a pinch. Money is an issue here. Is this possible or am I dreaming. Looking to just plug into cigarette lighter. Thanks. |

First, everyone is making this confusing. Christine - you can buy a power "inverter" that plugs into your car cigarette (or accessory) outlet, it accepts the standard 3 prong plug of any home appliance, including, fortunately enough, the plug for my laptop as I am too cheap to buy a car adaptor for my laptop and the battery has taken its' last charge. I have seen these inverter for sale everywhere, usually for around $30 USD. I picked mine up from BedBath&Beyond for 19.99usd. Essentially, you can plug a lamp into one of these things, they are that simple. (legal note: if you set your car on fire, dont blame me) Here is one option for a PC in a car: This is admittedly, well, not confusing but this guy did an insane amount of work and reminds me of how I would take on a project like this. http://www.tmz.com/wrx/carcomputer.html |

pc power supply voltage output voltages are 5 volt & 12 volt so no inverter is required. what is required is a 5 volt & a 12 volt regulator & something to split the voltages into negative polarity & positive polarity. this is the part i'm having trouble finding out. it is quite simple to do & somebody out there must be able to help us with this. please let me know if you are that person. cheers |

Power inverter is the way to go. You can pick one up at an auto parts store or at a Walmart for $50. You can also run any household appliance or power tool depending on the rating. |

You need a intelligent vehicle 12V DC-DC ATX PC power supply. M1-ATX DC-DC ATX is a smart car power cupply with "Anti-Thump" amplifier remote control. You don't need a power inverter

Or just a power inverter... You can use it for more then just your computer needs too  ! OOooooo you need the ultra deluxe toilet with 5 digital flush buttons and a remote replicated hand job attachment. |

Don't go down the invertor route unless you have no other option.
Have a look on http://www.mp3car.co.uk, it is a forum dedicated to in car computing and you'll find that there's a lot of people who've been doing this for a long time and much better able to help with the Car PC problems.
Say for example you want to get the Car PC to replace your headunit and do everything - an invertor won't help, as you'll have to power up you PC every time, wait for it to boot, shut it down manually when you are finished.. Not a very good solution. You want to have a look into the Opus or Carnetix power supplies - which run straight off the Car power (7V-19V DC don't let anyway tell you it's just 12v, life is not that simple) and theser PSUs allow you to use the STR standby option to keep the PC on using hardly any power while the car is off.

You need a Power supply for a car PC and + power inverter.The usuals PSUs (like 400W ) is m OOooooore too big for car. |

UK based company that offer complete PC installs for cars and trucks etc. They have been setting up for quite some time but they are doing a NEW website that is not yet finished but it gives an idea of what they do. Got a Pentium 4 PC installed by them under my seat running on a DC to DC converter and a 8" TFT touchscreen, running sat-nav, mp3, dvd, mobile phone utils and everything you can use ona desktop. |
