If I have 225 MB of RAM and I want to upgrade to 1 GB do i add an extra 800 MB or do i have to add the whole 1 GB all together.

Well if 1 gb is all you want, then add 800. I would just get a 1gb stick, then that leaves you room to expand again if you want.
