my son deleted norton antivirus when i go to add and remove programs i cant remove it .It says the specific module can not be found. What do I do? |

Oh my. This is a common problem with Symantec products in general. I am assuming you mean he tried to delete the program (or parts of it) manually and not through a proper uninstall. One of the many downfalls of Symantec is that when one of their programs is deleted or uninstalled it leaves files everywhere, especially in the registry.
First thing to do. Go to this page: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 and run the Norton Removal Tool. Kind of funny yet sad that a company has to issue a special tool to get RID of their products isn't it?
Second thing to do. Applaud you son's keen instincts and buy him that shiny new Playstation 3 he has been dreaming about. The kid done good. Do yourself a favor and take his lead and never install another Symantec product (other than Sygate until they screw that up too) as long as you live. And it wouldn't hurt to run JV16 Power Tools or similar even after the removal tool just to make sure all things Norton are truly gone.

Getting a template error when trying to edit posts, but anyway I should add you can't go wrong with Kaspersky's antivirus. Others I have tested and thought were very good are Extendia, MKS-Vir, and Bit Defender 10. |

haha, thats cause you can't edit posts on this forum. Sucks, I know.
Good call on the removal tool, I was going to suggest editing the registry to remove the entry from the add/remove programs list but that would leave all the norton information still in the registry, that tool will probably remove it. I'll add another anti-virus program to your list: AVG. It's free and works very good. |

NORTON is crap anyway...I use both AVG Antivirus and AVG Anti-spyware, they both work great |

I know alot of corps that use Norton, and I use Norton. I haven't had any specific problems with it, other than its' compatibility problems with the windows' firewall. How much is your AVG program a year Wolfman? |

Never install norton software there is other more stable programs out there.. try samples of this software at

and test it out if u like e-mail me and ill e-mail you the full version

I don't like Norton, sorry. I prefer Trend Micro Pc-cillin since it takes up less RAM when running and it's very trusted like Norton. |

Hey all I was doing was helping the dude and telling him the way it is according to what I have learned actually being out here using, installing, and usually uninstalling this stuff for over a decade. I defy you to find one true professional that will tell you any Symantec product is worth the plastic it was burned on. And to state that it is "one of the most trusted names out there" is somewhat akin to saying "The Ford Escort was the best selling car in the world so it has to be great". Alot of people are stupid, they buy what everyone else buys without looking into things. The Escort turned out to be a royal piece of cr!p.
In 1990 Symantec (known as Sh!tmantec in the industry) took control of the company and Peter Norton left, and took his expertise and vision with him. Ever since, they have ruined his original designs and made it more incompetent and bloated as each year goes by.
Sure, they have decent virus definitions, and are usually one of a handful of companies to scoop the lastest worms and virii when they present themselves, but to compare them to world-class programmers and virii researchers like the ones at Kaspersky, BitDefender, MKS-Vir, etc, is far-fetched at best. And all of those companies know how to build and efficient shell to get the most out of their definition databases....Symantec doesn't and seemingly never will. Avoid their stuff like the plague and thank me later. |

When ANY new member posts a link to something they're selling, they are going to get the reaction I gave him. Not bashing any of the other software that's out there, other than I had Mcaffee and hated it. Norton has kept me clean for 10+ years at home, as well as on the servers at work. That is all.
Funny how Brad and Peter just happened to register on the very same day. (Just an observation). |

Oh my. First of all, do you think I have the time to make up another member name and save it until a golden opportunity comes along and I can spam the computer forum of some obscure site like this? I have a forum on another site where I have personally helped over 15k people with their computer problems.
Second of all, you got both accusations wrong. Not only did he not join on the same day as me (I can't even believe I had to look) but if you read his post again, he is actually not trying to sell anything. He said he likes Kaspersky, and gave the link to download.com (if you haven't heard of this site I feel sorry for you) said to try the free trial, and if you like what you see he will send you the full program for FREE via email. While what he was implying is illegal, I think it is safe to say he isn't trying to do anything but be nice.
I didn't even notice this place had a computer section until a week or so in, I figured I would try to help you guys out because I know that it is hard for just a couple people to keep up with the help requests.

D@mn man, my bad. We get alot of people who DO spam here and our responses are usually to ignore them. Sometimes my ADD and torrets gets a hold of me. Don't get discouraged about Ecoustics, there are a lot of knowledable ppl here and it is a fun place to learn. Please carry on. |

OK, both AVG Antivirus and AVG Antispyware are FREE!!..I think you can download them at cnet.com, I also use a free firewall, as the "Windows Firewall" isn't very good...I use ZoneAlarm, another free program, I think its also at Cnet.com..if these programs aren't at Cnet, you can always Google them. |
