Ok, I have a new (well, 3 months old) computer with a 3.2 gig Celeron processor, 512mb ram, 60gig hd. Yeah, I know its already fast, but I was wondering what I could do to speed it up even more.Any suggestions?

If you've never done it before, I wouldn't suggest it as it can easily take out your CPU and leave your computer dead until you get a new CPU (which could be $50-120+).

Well, I was mainly talking about a software download, or maybe some tricks in windows.

www.getfirefox.com

That will prevent you from getting a lot of spyware and popups that are so commonly associated with IE. Thought lately IE's security updates have been much better.

It's all mostly just keeping the computer maintained, you really won't get it faster with software, it all comes down to the hardware. I'd suggest another stick of RAM as your first upgrade. Maybe get a faster RPM hard drive...though it would kind of be in vain to do too much upgrading to that computer because it has a Celeron processor :P

Yeah, sure.

Celerons just aren't regarded very well by the computer community because of their cheap price matched with lower performance. But they're still great processors that will last forever if they're treated right. Another stick of RAM would be a pretty big upgrade, actually. Shouldn't be too expensive, either.

Well, things are definately faster with firefox and the tweak I did. DL was a little over 3000kbps dont know UL speed. Now its 4812kbps download speed, and 356kbps upload speed.

yes I know that RAM is fairly inexpensive, but I have 512mb...how much more should I add? another 512? and will I see a difference if I do?

Yep, another 512 will make a difference for sure, especially for having multiple applications open.

your downloading at 600 kilobytes per sec or a little over a half a megabyte per sec.
Increasing your ram or power supply or overclocking your cpu will not effect your download speed in the least. Thats controlled by your internet connection not the speed of your cpu or ram.

^Nice, I didn't see that connection. I thought he was trying to make the computer faster, not the internet speed faster.
