I have some old cassette tapes that I would like to transfer to MP3. The tapes are old (1964-early 70's). No music, just voice. I had an old Sony duel tape deck, but it started to eat tape. I'm guessing that most old decks will do the same.
I'm going to use the microphone jack to my computer and have the recording software I need.
My question is should I invest in a new cassette deck, hook it up to a receiver and then play it thru my computer, or should I just get out an old walkman and play it thru that? Will the quality be significantly better thru a real system? Should I wait for my anticipated computer upgrade this summer and get a high end sound card with digial inputs?

did u ever get your answers on this one? U'll do significantly better getting the signal into the computer rather than playing and recording thru a mic. Altho if that is the only choice -then do that. Can go into detail if ness, but if you've already solved this, dont want to bother.
