1. Which OS do you use? If you use Windows, right click "my computer", left click "properties". 2. What is the size of your hard drive? 3. How much free space is on your hard drive? 4. Which file system do you use? Open "my computer". Left click your "c" drive. Left click "properties". 5. How long have you had your computer? When is the last time you defragged your computer. 6. What type of internet connection to you have? 7. When did the problem begin? 8. Which CPU & what speed? See #1, above. 9. How much memory / ram? See # 8, above. Please give a specific example of "my computer is running slow". Do you mean when you open a program for the first time after booting? Do you mean when downloading files from the internet? Do you mean when you try to play a song on your hard drive? Do you mean when you open a text document? Do you mean when you open an image file? CM123 |

You need to answer all of the questions he asked before we can really help you at all... Defragmenting is a program that clears up space by reorganizing files. |

You don't defrag a CPU, you defrag a hard drive. No it doesn't delete anything. Depending on CPU speed, how bad the HD is and empty space, it can take awhile. |

Some people refer to the "box" as the CPU. You & I understand, Mr Massey, that the CPU is ONLY a component within the box. Many people don't. Whether or not they should be using a computer is not for me to decide. Instead, I try to teach them the differences. |

JL: I understand. I wasn't born with a computer in my lap. I had to learn. You're welcomed. There is ALWAYS a danger of losing one's data. Data backup can vary from: copying files to a floppy, cd, dvd, additional drive; creating an "image"; creating a "clone". To answer your initial question: In a perfect world, you can add an external drive, move the files from your hard drive to the external drive; then run a clean up tool; the run "error checking", then defrag your computer. In an earlier post, I asked multiple questions. You provided some of the answers. Please provide the following: If you use Windows, right click "my computer", left click "properties". 2. What is the size of your hard drive? 3. How much free space is on your hard drive? 4. Which file system do you use? Open "my computer". Left click your "c" drive. Left click "properties". Your answer to #2 is 200 GB. Please answer 3 & 4. tj |
