Would someone be able to give me a bit of guidance please. I have read around on here and established that i need a firewire port on my laptop and cable to be able to transfer from my mini dv to my laptop so that i can put my video on to disk. I don't think i have a firewire port on my laptop (which is an Acer Travelmate 290E) and the camera is a Sony DCR-HC14E which i believe does have a mini Dv output.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Look for a port marked IEEE1394. This is the same as a firewire port. I believe this is a standard feature for the Travelmate 290.
