First thing is read Thom Hogan's article: http://www.bythom.com/support.htm

Then follow his advice.

One good budget option that I think would still follow his aim is the Feisol tripods. I plan on starting with a set of their legs.

Hi Chris,
You have spoken about Feisol a few weeks back. Have you tried out their tripods yet? Are you looking at the Carbon Fiber series?

I'm very much interested in your views and findings.

I haven't personally. I'm concentrating on getting a few more items for my studio shooting. A tripod is fairly low on my list--glass comes first. I have an old cheapie Slik to get me by for now & I rarely use a tripod anyway.

However, I have read a lot of positive reviews over at fredmiranda--and those are some demanding users who know exactly what they want. Generally the consensus is the build quality isn't up to Manfrotto or Gitzo, but at half the price it's pretty good & about 90% of what you get with Gitzo. AFAIK they are only carbon fiber.
