a friend of mine needs to edit some old home movie footage and I wasn't exactly sure how to go about getting the hi8 to a computer and/or to the mini dv tape.

You need a capture device. It is a "link" between your camcorder (analog) and computer (digital). It needs to have composite (RCA) jacks. It will convert the analog video to a digital file on your computer (avi, mpeg) that can be edited with software. It is suggested that capture be stored on a drive separate from your OS and capture software. It is a smoother capture (audio video sync also) and video files can be very large. I recommend canopus devices.
