How to I add five feet of length to it without losing any signal strength?

I have heard that a 300 ohm antenna cable 300 to 500 feet long, stapled in a "S Loop" along the interior attic rafters, may be my best option for local TV and FM reception sense I am not allowed to install exterior antenna or a mast in my neighborhood. Is there a formula to calculate how much antenna cable I should use for best results?
PS. I have tried manufactured antenna with limited results. The antennas I have tried include $70.00 Aluminum frame and $300.00 flat, powered antennas.
