I have nowhere to connect the remote turn on wire from my HU to my amplifier. I spliced it into another wire on my HU instead. Now, the power light on my amplifier turns on, but I get nothing out of the rear speakers that are connected to the amp. I guess I am wondering if the remote wire I connected to the HU was only 5V instead of 12V, would the power light on my amp still come on?

Remote wires are only about 4 to 5V anyway. Your Power wire (8 or 4 Gauge) is the 12V or less. Since you spliced the wire on to your HU (which is completly OK) I would check you amp to make sure its off when you turn the car off. Most remote wires to factory HU are constant power, which if a amp is hooked to will drain the battery real fast.
