I keep getting from local dealers that all chevy cars and trucks, 2000 and up, need to keep the old radios still hooked-up, or I'll lose all kinds of stuff, like daytime running lights, door chime, and just slowly everything will take a crap. Is this true? And if so, WHY?

could be true.
Hondas are that way, too.
but, metra makes a T-harness for these so you can stuff the factory radio behind the dash and put in a new one for actual use.
