Considering Reference 6000cs or Kappa 60.5 for front doors of 2003 4 door Chevy truck as replacement for 6.75" factory P.O.S.'s. Crutchfield shows them as not fitting fr door, whereas cardomain and Infinity show they do fit. I called Crutch and the rep said it was a mounting height issue with the factory grill. Said that they could be fitted and that a pro could certainly do it, but I'm trying to save $ and am installing my own damping material anyway. I'm pretty handy but don't want to get in over my head. Called cardomain and they didn't have any info.

Does anyone have a clue as to whether this can be a DIY project? Is there perhaps a shallower mount that they could be fit in or is this truly a custom job?

If you have a rec for a similar priced component that would have as good of a bass sound w/o the potential mounting problem I'm all ears. It's so hard to compare speakers since you can never enough models at the same place for a side-by-side comparison and your ears can't remember very well (plus acoustics/amps of each sound room are so different). I WAS able to compare the 6000cs to Alpine SPS170A and thought 6000cs were deeper and fuller. Haven't found the Alpine SPR's to audition or the Kappa's. One dealer who sells Apline, JL, Bost and MBQ said the Alpine and JL's will have better mid bass which is what I need since sub option in this truck is too expensive. Unfortunately he had none of the potential candidates hooked up.

Also, I'm assuming there's some spot to stick the xover in between the door and door panel - right?

Crossovers go in a lot of places... I usually prefer them behind the kickpanels or under the deck (in the console) so that you can still get to them (as opposed to in the doors).

Which truck is it?

It's a 2003 4 door Chevy. Technically it takes 6.75" speakers

I guess while I'm at it I may as well ask for rec on placement distance of tweeter from mid.
