my 97 riviera has components stock in the front doors (5.25" and small tweets) would I notice an improvement if I just swapped them out for an aftermarket set without putting an amp on them or would it be necessary to put an amp on them to notice the difference

It'll be a pretty big improvement, but you should always use an external amplifier to get the most potential out of an aftermarket component set.
