On my Ford OE head unit it would work without the ignition on or key in. I put in a JVC MP3 unit using a wiring adapter (JVC is ISO) and now the ignition has to be on to activate the unit (it will eject cds etc without). Is there a quick way to bypass the need for ignition to turn on the unit?

sure.
wire the ignition line from the head unit to a constant +12V line (like the memory wire has) instead of using a switched +12V line.
then you have to remember to turn off the radio after you turn off the engine of course.
