Im getting two 250w rms subs and was looking at the mtx thunder801d. at 12.5v it pushes 500W which is perfect but at 14.4v it pushes about 800W. am I gonna have to turn my gain way down making it pointless to own this amp or should i look for another amp

gains have NO effect on the power the amp produces.
all the gains to is balane the input stage of teh amp to the input line voltage.

remember the amp only puts out that much power at full volume. if you don't turn the volume up to 100% then your subs won't ever see that much power anyway.
that amp should be fine.
