can all head units turn stock subs off or does the head unit need an equilizer?

You usually needs an amplifier. HU normally can't drive subs real well.

DAVID, anonymous is right, there is a light blue wire comeing off the back of the head unit and that is used to power up an amp. Head units don't give off enough power to run a sub, u need to get an amp. And as soon as u do then u can put in a toogle switch on the remote wire.

DAvid usually there are some Head Units which have subwoofer Controls just look around for one of them.
Jeremy there are many Head Units that are out now that have a Amplifier output wire which removes the process of installing a Toggle switch I dont understand why you would want one If you dont have to have it.
