Totally depends on what organization and class you are running.

Some subs have advantages over others in given classes and vehicle.
Its totally dependent on your specific situation.

I have seen people swap 'mid-level' subs for 'high-level' and loose SPL in many instances.

with unlimited funds I'd try either a RD SHW, or an upper level DD sub. that's just me though. it's impossible to say what's best.

DD Z series is the best you can get and don't let other people tell you different. This is strictly speaking for an SPL sub though.

What power handling range are you looking for? What tuning freq? How much space?
Someone could say a DD Z 18 but then find out you have 1000rms and 2ft^3 to work with. No single sub will have the best results in all spl applications.

"There's that word again; "heavy". Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?"

You say money no object you wouldn't be doing SPL ?? Thats just absurd!! I think of it like this. I am a car guy when I build an engine for somebody I build it for Torque because the horsepower takes care of itself. The same applies to car audio I think Because if Im bagin some serious SPL Im gonna need some terrific highs if I wanna hear them!!!

Alright, when competing for SPL make sure you have plenty of tweeters installed in your vehicle =/

If money was no object i would have a straight sq setup. There will always be someone louder than your daily driver, so theres no point to it. Dont get me wrong i like bump just as much as everyone else but it gets old.

Hah true Nick...

My point is that if you had no limit on funds for a system you wouldnt do SPL unless it was for a comp car... at least i wouldnt.

Plus the car i would get with this "limit less" amount of money wouldnt be very friendly for big subs. :-)
