I'm about to install an amp in my car. I was wondering if I could put the fuse close to the amp instead of close to the battery on the power wire. Would this be a bad thing to do?

Very bad that defeats the purpose of the fuse, to protect the wire. If you don't put a fuse near the battery and the wire shorts it WILL burn, likely starting a fire.....

yeah dude, i didn't understand this properly for a while myself. i thought the fuse was there to protect the amp but its not its there more for the overall safety of the car and battery.

if your not running mecca car audio competitions than just put the fuse by your battery. if you are running shows you must place the fuse 18 inches from your amp.
