what's the difference between 2 volt and 4 volt preamp outputs? (besides voltage)

Nothing is different besides the voltage. However the difference is voltage does mean something. The higher the voltage, the stronger the signal will be coming out of your pre-outs. Higher is generally better. 2 is kinda low, (High end units sometimes have 8V) but unless you are picky, 2 V will still get the job done.

Higher preout voltage reduces background noise. It does not make your system louder, better, etc.
