9887. much more intuitive than the 880. has an actual (read: usable) ipod interface....all the SQ features you need, and the ability for IMPRINT which really puts it over the top. ewok if i remember right from another thread....you've never worked with a 9887 before....nor an 880.......? am i mistaken? i would think some experience and knowledge on the topic would be needed to voice such a strong opinion..... |

side question, what are the major differences between the alpines 9887 and 9886 because if all i need is a 9886 while the 9887 is more than what i need, ill stick with the 9886 |

9886 is more than enough for all the most high end SQ systems. I'd get the 9886 unless the 87 were available for the same price somehow. |

I just went through the 9886/9887 comparison as well. I decided on the 87 for the following reasons. Better DSP. I think the 87 has a better DAC but Alpine site is unclear on this. Out of the box the 87 has greater EQ/TA/XOver capabilities. You will need the PXA-H100 to do these on the 86. The 87 uses the currently available KTX-100EQ for Imprint while the 86 requires the yet unreleased(at least not on the Alpine site or at my dealer)PXA-H100 for it's Imprint. The 86 does have USB built in and on 87 it is not available. Also, shopping on the web got a price of only about $75 more is I went with it. |

these were my problems: alpines - current inability to buy the pxa-h100 for the 86/just get an 87 pioneer - ive heard of possible rca problems and if it will affect me in the future even if it doesnt show up right away if i could get a final comparison on the two brands, that would be great |

Bottom line if you really need the 87s extra features get it, but the 86 is good enough for most systems. As for EQ and X-over, those should be done at the amps or with external units anyways, not with the HU. And yeah, pioneers are known for having rca issues, thats the biggest reason I don't recommend them. |

I would go with the 880...I have never heard of a pioneer having a problem that wasn't user error |
