i got a digital volt meter that has 5 wires in the back red black yellow white and green which goes to which??

red will be + and black is - for power.

Now the yellow and white are probably the measurement leads. If so, one of them is + and the other is -.

Try connecting the red and yellow to positive and the black and white to negative. If the meter shows negative voltage, switch the yellow and white.
