is there some kind of a general setting for the gain on an amp mine is turned up about 3/4 of the way is this to high

yes, get a multi meter, dissconnect sub woofers.

burn a 50 hz test tone to cd from

www.realmofexcursion.com

find out your amp's voltage here

http://www.subwoofertools.com/forum/setgain.asp

now remove the subs, put the meter on A.C. VOLTAGE and the subs terminals and with the radios volume 45 percent of the way up and the test tone playing set your gain to the voltage u got from the calculator above. when done your all set, reconnect the subs.

^^^^ Do what he said, except use 75% volume. Thats safe on pretty much any HU.

walmart has them buy a Digital Multi Meter and it should have a setting for ac voltage
