Ok after reading the equalizer section, does it mean one is only useful after you've had an RTA analyze your sound? Is that the only way to properly set one?

only the case for 1/3 octave and parametric EQs.
if you have a simple 5, 7, or 9 band type slider EQ, those you can just tune by ear.

And many folks would say that you don't even need an RTA when using a P-Eq, unless you're looking to go flat. If you're looking to make it sound good to you you can run without an RTA.
