Its basically over working an amplifier. The waves an amp puts out are supposed to be sine waves but when an amp clips it cannot fully amplify the trough and crests of the wave (top and bottom) causing a square wave. This is bad for the amplifier and you will notice alot of distortion in the sound. |

it clips the top and bottom off of the sine wave making it a square wave. and thus sends DC(direct current) to your subwoofer's VC. |

It all depends but, yes on most amps having the gain all the way up will cause clipping. |
