Eq is only for people who want to tweak every little bit of sound out of the system. Its not a neccesity. As for cross overs, they olny send certain notes to speakers.

If you want to use a stock head unit in your ride, an EQ can be very helpful to have full control over the sound. Not needed for the average system.

Crossovers block a certain range of frequency from getting sent to your speakers. For example, if your front speakers are getting any low frequency bass to them, they will start getting distorted. So you adjust the crossover to block those low freq's so your speakers only get delivered sound that is the proper frequency response.
