What is the recommended voltage for preamps? i've seen some with 4 5 8 volts. would 8 volts cause problems?

8 volts would sound cleaner but you have to have an amp that could handle it or else the signal will clip. Of course, you can always turn the voltage down with a potentiometer...Right now 4v is fine.

how would you (besides asking) find if a speaker/amp is capable of handling 8v preamps

The preamp input voltage range would most likely be in the amp spec sheet. Especially if it could handle 8v.
