How do I optimally set up the 5 band parametric EQ, X-over, and time correction?

I understand how to change the settings but I feel that I could get a lot more out of it than I get by doing it casually by ear. Should I use a test CD or any special equipment? Is it worth having a shop do it? Is there a particular place I should look for information?

My speaker setup is 4 polk db coaxials in the stock speaker locations and a subwoofer in the trunk.

Excuse me I have a 9833, not a 9835. I believe they are the same when it comes to my question.
