I have two 6 1/2 speakers in the front and two 6x9 speakers in the back. I am wondering how many channels should the amp i buy have and how can it be wired up.

The best thing to do would be to get a 4 channel amp that puts out close to the rated RMS of the speakers, then you could fade the rears as needed. Cheapest option would be to choose a 2 channel amp that puts out the necessary power on a 2 ohm load, but you have no control over the fronts and rears that way.
