I have a 500W RMS MM12 polk audio sub. I am looking into buying an amp. Pretty set on the Sony Xplod

it gives off 500W power bridged.
I have a headunit that has a preamp out. Does that do me any good? or do i need to buy a new headunit to make it work? |

mario don't buy a sony amp man. They are total rubbish. If you buy a sony amp there is a good chance that it will do just as the name implies and explode. lol.

Yo Mario, if budget is tight, then try looking at MTX6500D. It's cheap on eBay.
Sony does have some advantages. If you live in a cold climate, use it as a heater for your trunk!
One more thing, don't get fooled by Sony's marketing scam. They might've been the first to use peak power instead of rms. If you're lucky, you'll get half of the stated "useable" power. |

anything but that sony
they have the highest failure rates of any company I can think of in car audio.
save yourself the headaches and avoid sony anything for cars.
trust me.
they blow.

thanks guys, but that still doesnt really answer my question about the headunit and wiring. does having a preamp out do anything for me? or do i need a new head unit? |

The preout rca connectors will work with any amp. You don't need a new HU unless you want dvd and surround sound feature.

you guys both recommended amps that delivered 250W at 4 Ohms. My sub is 500W RMS at 4 ohms. Do you really think that these amps will deliver enough power? |

you need to specify the coil configuration of your speakers when asking for suggestions on an amp.
that affects the amount of power the amp will deliver.

i think you mean dual voice coil by DVC. Right? Well, my sub i believe is single voice coil at 4 Ohms. In that case, will the 250W amps you and issac suggested work? |

if you have a single 4 ohm coil sub, you'll need an amp that supplies:
500wRMS x 1 @ 4 ohms mono
or
500wRMS x 1 @ 4 ohms bridged (2 channel)
it'll be cheaper to find a 2 channel amp rated for bridged power.
it'll be around 125wRMS x 2 @ 4 ohms
