I thought i fried my head unit a long time ago but come to find out last night when i was hookin it up for shits and giggles i touched the remote wire for the amplifier to the illumination/dimmer going into the wire harness and it turned on.....i have to turn the volume up to about 40 to hear music...and if i try to hook up the amplifier the cd player shuts off

you've got a short in the head unit. it is damaged, but probably repairable by a radio repair shop if ya want to go that route.
worth it if ya like the radio and want to keep it

somewhere on the pcboards in the unit.
no idea without schematics and tracing the problem.
