Okay, I have a '99 Jetta. I got the code for the car, and when I put it in, and held the right track button, it still came up to safe. I don't understand what is going on. |

Hello, I have a 99 vw beetle. When I bought it the sound was perfect (with the manufacturer's stereo) and eventually it started to sound really crappy, specially w/ the bass. I thought about getting a new stereo, but they told me that to install it (supposedly a "free installation") they would charge me 120 dlls. as they have to rewire the car because my original speakers won't work with the new stereo as they are hooked up to the amp. Does anyone know what to do? It does not make any sense to get new speakers *and* a new stereo. Is there anything that can be done to either fix this stereo or install a new one? |

I have a 98 Jetta -- I never changed the code so it should be the original factory installed # -- but I can't even remember what that is -- Is there any place where I can get that number without paying through the nose? |

Does anyone have the 2001 cabrio password? I bought the car used a few months ago and just recently replaced the battery causing the stereo to go in safe mode. Unfortunately I have no car manual so I don't have the password. Any help would be much appreciated!!! |

Hello Everyone, I just want someone's opinion: ***Is it cheaper to just replace the stock radio with a different radio from Circuit City?**** Because my radio is in Safe Mode, but I don't have a CD player. Can't I just replace the old radio and buy a radio that has a CD Player/Radio included? |

Ashley, there is no standard code for your radio. If that were the case, the thieves would steal them and use it. Every radio/model has different code. Personally it doesn't make any sense since they are cheap radios. If your stock radio doesn't have cd player built in, I'd spend the money on a new unit. Yes you can buy a new radio to replace your old one. You will need a wiring harness to match your car with the new radio. In the end, you'll be much happier with it. As for the cost, it could be a wash, or a bit higher. You can't really compare stock radio with after market units. Remember, most of the stock items cost $5 - $25, whereas, after market items range $100+ (much better quality). |

Hi there - I just bought a 1998 VW Passat. My stereo is in safe mode... my boyfriend said that his mom's old Jetta used to go into safe mode and they found the number underneath the interior of the trunk (on the door). Have any of you heard of this? Before I go peeling my door away?? Thanks!! |

Hi Jenilee, I actually heard of that...and for some people the code is in the trunk under tire well. I think that you should check to make sure that the code is there ...it's better that you know that it's there then to pay money to have VW get the code for you. Isaac....thank you I will take your advice |

Hi everybody, We have a Volkswagen passat 98 V6. Recently, we had our battery changed. So, as you can imagine, there was Safe 1000 sign on our radio. After reading this forum, I checked my owners manual, but could not find anything over there. However, I was able to find Sound System manual Our code no is 1762. (I am not sure if it is a generic number for all 98 passats or not) and here is the instructions to enter - from the manual: " Perform the steps in exactly the following order: 1. Turn on the Radio. "Safe" will appear in the display. 2. After 3 seconds, the number "1000" will appear in the display. 3. Use the radio station preset buttons 1 to 4 to enter the code number found on your Radio Card. (which was in the first page of Sound manual ) Use preset button 1 to enter the first digit in the code number. Use button 2 to enter the second digit, etc. The value range for each of the 4 digits is "0-9". The digit will increase by 1 each time you tap the preset button. The number returns to "0" after 9". 4. After you finish entering the code, press the right side (">") of the SEEK button for longer than 2 seconds until you hear an audible signal. 5. If you have entered the code number corectly, "LSM" wll appear in the display. (I just was the radio channel indicator and then everything was working as usual). If you enter the wrong code by mistake: If you've accidnetally entered a wrong code number, "SAFE" will appear in the display. Initially it'll flash, then stay on. You can repat the procedure again one time. (So, 2 attempts then 1 hour locked) If the wrong code number is entered again, the unit will be disabled for about 1 hour. Leave the unit on and the key in the ignition swithch for this hour. At the beginnin of the manual, as other said, it states that dealership will help you free of charge. (apparently, they don't) I hope this helps everybody. Good luck.

i just bought a 1996 cabrio, and suprise, i can't get it outb of safe.. i went to dealer and got the pin, he told me to leave car in auxilary (sp) mode for an hour, then 1000 would appear and i could enter code, this didn't work, i tried several times, then i called my friend w/ a vw dealership and he had me press all sorts of combos..nothing works, he also said he never sells a car without fixing this for his customer, it seems ridiculous to me that web all have to go through this and then who know if the thing even works i feel stupid that i didn't demand an owner's manual and to hear the stereo before buying car as music is extremeley important, anyway, what if i just went to best buy or something and bought a stereo? would it cost a lot for them to take out and rewire this crappy one... anyone have advice, im still trying... thanks!! |

Hey everyone...I have been going nuts all day since replacing the battery in my 1996 Passat. I has been locked in SAFE mode but I did have the code. THIS WORKED FOR ME!!! The method to reset the radio is to press the SEEK and the <SCAN buttons simultaneously. This brings up 1000 on the display. Then you set the code. Then press the SEEK and the <SCAN buttons simultaneously The radio should turn on... Good luck! I hope that it works for you!

This is just funny! For the last week Ive been trying to figure out how to turn this safe mode off. I had the Operators Manual, but unfortunately the radio card was cut out. Using this forum I was able to get my radio out (just used the 4 nails method) and learned where to go from there (retrieving the serial no. and calling the dealer). The dealer told me to bring the car there, and when I did he said its a flat 30$ fee. However, he couldnt help me this morning so he scheduled me for Monday morning. Good thing too, because when I got home I decided to take one more look around, and I was surprised to find another Operators Manual. This one was in both english and spanish, as opposed to the other manual which was english only. The pages were kind of stuck together and as I peeled them apart, I was quite surprised to find the radio card of that manual still there. So I ran out to my car and tried the code (I knew exactly how to enter it due to this forum). And it worked. Just thought that was a funny story. |

Okay people - I'm going to respond to about 5 of you at once. First off: Stereo codes ARE written in the trunk and in wheel wells, but ONLY on cars that were taken to a dealer at one point to have the code put in. For instance: my boyfriend's mother had a jetta. She had the code in her trunk because the dealer put it there. Second: You should NEVER have to pay for your code at ANY dealer. If they tell you you have to, they are LYING to you. It is written explicently in the manual that if you need your code, you can go to ANY VW dealers and get it, free of charge. Do NOT be had by this. Third: The person with the 1998 Passat who can't get their car to go out of SAFE LOCKED so that they can put their code it: you must turn your ignition to the point where you can't go any further without turning your car on. LEAVE YOUR STEREO ON. You MUST leave it this way for an hour. DONT FOOL AROUND WITH IT BEFORE THEN. Im' not sure about other models, but you should pull up your emergency brake so that your lights turn off... don't want to run out of battery again. HOPE THAT HELPS!!! |

Sorry, but dont see a place to edit, i finaly got out my radio but when i called the dealer they said that that the serial number for the stereo didnt match the vin number to my car.. and that there was nothing he could do, so im guessing its not a stock radio. someone changed it? any idea's on where this code might be, its not in my owners manual, i looked in the trunk but not really to sure where to look? also one more thing, when i try to enter the code it wont let me change the first number it stays at 1, does that mean the code starts with 1 or is it like a hidden password type thing, if anyone has any ideas please please help |

I have an idea. Goto your local car stereo dealership of choice (circuit city, best buy, walmart, k-mart, or the other numerous local shop) and get a new radio. It's less aggrivation and will make you feel good to have something new to look at in your dash instead of that wretched stock radio. Your eyes and ears will thank you.

I have a Golf 94, I found a nearby radio specialist, had some instructions, but I decided to double-check on the internet, thought I might be lucky. Well SURPRISE!! Thanks to this forum and the internet, found the exact information (even more precise than what that guy told me). Followed the instructions given by Gene, and it worked like a charm: - turn radio on - press Mode + Scan and hold - enter four digit code using numbers 1 to 4 by pressing repeatedly until you reach the appropriate numbers - press Mode + Scan and hold again to finalize until you see "Scan" appear again and then the radio unfreezes (a radio station started playing). But follow Gene's instruction thoroughly not mine, just confirming the steps Oh and just one note, my code starts with a zero (0). You can't enter 0 as the first number, you have a choice of 1 or nothing (blank). Just put blank if you have 0 like me, it works.

Hey There guys, Im in the same boat. I have a 2002 Audi TT and the safe lock is on... it happens every time my battery dies. Luckily though, I know how to fix it. If you have your code: you push the "as" and "ads" buttons(at the same time)until the # 1000 comes onto the screen. Then you first enter the # "0" and then continue to enter your code. Then press the "as" and "ads" buttons together again and you should be all set. If you dont have the code: dont bust up your stereo, bring it in the a dealership and they can do it in 2 minutes! Good luck... |

Found out Premium III radio in Safe mode is not original to the 97 Passat, it was replaced by the previous owner. Went to Dealer with VIN & Radio #, both do not match up. Do codes exist for just the radio # alone? Where do I go from here? Just want to resell car without having to buy a new radio. |

We have a 2001 Jetta, replaced the battery and the radio was in SAFE mode. It came up with 1000 automatically. No Owners Manual. In reading the above entries, here's how I fixed it. Pulled up the spare tire deck, and along the left side of the spare tire, there is a sticker with a VWZ# and right below that # is a 4 digit number. Then I followed these steps. Perform the steps in exactly the following order: 1. Turn on the Radio. "Safe" will appear in the display. 2. After 3 seconds, the number "1000" will appear in the display. 3. Use the radio station preset buttons 1 to 4 to enter the code number found on your Radio Card. (which was in the first page of Sound manual :-) ) Use preset button 1 to enter the first digit in the code number. 5. After the audible, Monsoon displayed on the screen and ouila!, the Sounds of Music. Good luck and thanks to all that submitted help. Probably would have cost an arm and leg. |

Hi I have a 96 Passat GLX VR6 and I have the same problem as most on this forum with the radio. I have been able to get the 6 disc cdchanger/radio to display "1000" by pressing the correct buttons, but I have no code to enter into the the stereo. I have cheaked the trunk and no green stick paper with the code, nothing in the manual either. SO if anyone out there has the same vehicle as me and is willing to give the proper code if they have it, then PLEASE I beg you e-mail it to me!!! Thank for any help you can offer. |

The code for my 1996 Jetta GLS preimium stereo (w/ the 6 CD changer) is 0197. To try the code... 1) Power the radio on... you should see "Safe" on the screen. 2) Simultaneously hold down the "mode", "scan", and "mix" buttons for three seconds. 3) If the key-combo works, you should see "1000" apear. 4) Use the "1", "2", "3", and "4" keys to enter the code. 5) Simultaneously hold the down the "mode", "scan", and "mix" buttons until the code disappears and the radio works. 6) If not, try again. IMPORTANT: You have three tries to get the code right. After that the third attempt the radio locks and only a dealer can unlock it for you. |

Make sure you guys check over the radio. You might get lucky like I did. On my 96 Jetta the radio code was written on the top cover in felt tip pen. Also, for those having trouble getting the radio out, in the lawn and garden section of hardware stores they have "u" shaped stakes that hold drip system hoses to the ground. Get two of them and push each one through the two holes on both sides of the radio about a 1/2" and spread. They release all four latches at once and give enough grip to pull the unit. |

I have a 95 Jetta and the quickest answer to any of your questions if you DON'T have your code to your stereo unit is to simply buy the small tools at any Auto parts store (for Jettas would be the same as any ford tools) and take the unit out. OR you could be thrifty and get 4 nails that are at least a 1/2 in. long and place them securely in the four little holes on the corners of the stereo unit and simultaneously jiggle the head unit out.. keep tryin if at first you don't succeed cause it takes a good little while. Now don't yank hard or else you will damage your wires. NOW if you have suceeded in taking out your stereo unit search around the unit top bottom left right and try to find a 4 digit number .. IT HAS TO START WITH EITHER A '0' or '1'. and then IF you have found this number follow these instructions. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TAKE OUT THE STEREO UNIT IF YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON! Turn key all the way before turnin the actual car on.. THEN press and hold MODE and SCAN together until "1000" appears. Then using the numbers 1 through 4 on the front of the unit put in your security code. ( if your first number is '0' press 1 and you will get a blank spot) Then continue putting the other numbers in.. if your second number is a 7.. Press 2 until the number 7 comes up .. and so on and so forth. AFTER you have put in your security code press and hold MODE and SCAN simultaneously again.. SAFE should flash once or twice and then go directly to your radio or whatever. THEN you're set.! if you have any further questions feel free to e-mail me at SincereOne12@verizon.net Wish the best of luck to you guys. |

Recently I had replaced my stock premium sound radio with a aftermarket CD player. After a few weeks of using it and the CD player was working fine. EVERYTHING cut out... So then I took out my CD player to check the wires. A few had shown copper wire which then lead me to believe I had blown a fuse. Checked both fuses in the car and on the CD player. Both are fine and show no burn. Now when I open the door it went from the normal door ajar sound (european police siren sound) to a flat line buzz... I fixed the wires and put it back in and still nothing. What could be wrong?? |

I note with great interest the bit about the radio unlock code appearing on a "green sticky" in the spare tire compartment. My Passat is a station wagon, and I've looked for the green sticky without any success. Is there someplace else to look on the Passat wagons for the radio unlock code? If no one can speak to the above, is there a good link that someone can provide to a site where instructions for removing the radio "easily" appear so I can go to the dealer with the radio serial number in order to obtain the unlock code? Thanks in advance. |

Ok everyone who is asking for the code.. DON'T BOTHER! They're not universal codes! If you're really desperate and don't want to try to take your head unit out yourself in which I explained how to do in one of my earlier posts then go and buy yourself andother head unit and have someone else replace it.. be it Circuit City or Best Buy or somethin! Dont' ask for a code cause if you don't have it NO ONE ELSE WILL HAVE IT.. My instructions work for all models from 1993 to 1998 so check that out.. I have my e-mail address so you can ask me questions as well and if you live in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia area I would be more than happy to help you out in a way. Chris UA - The vin # should be on a metal plate (about 1/2 inch by 2 inch) on the dash above the steering wheel close to the window. You will probably have to look through the windshield to see it. |

Thanks "av8ur"!! I have a 2001 Jetta--replaced my battery and my radio went into safe mode. Didn't have the code and followed "av8ur's" advice and sure enough, I found the code on a sticker to the left of my spare tire. Turns out, there is no universal code as I thought. |

For anyone who bought their car used and does not have the anti-theft code: Several people have posted that sometimes there is a little sticker (somewhere) inside the trunk that has the car's VIN and underneath it, a four digit code (the anti-theft code). This is not, as someone hypothesized, because the owners of these cars had the dealer put the sticker in. The sticker comes in the car with the instructions for operating the sound system. The instructions say that you should place the sticker in an inconspicuous place that you will remember. Hence, the stickers in the trunks. However, since individual people are putting these stickers in, there doesn't seem any reason to think they will all be in like places. Check the inside of the trunk and anywhere else that seems inconspicuous to place a sticker with an anti-theft code for a sticker with the VIN# and a four digit number under it. The 4-diget number is the code to the sound system. It seems particularly likely for cars that have their sound instructions, but no code in them, that the owners did this. |
