Why Women Don't Care About HDTV?
1) Technology is Complicated Women don't want to invest the time to learn and keep up with the developments. Technology associated with consumer electronics is getting too sophisticated for the average person to easily understand. One must actually invest the time to learn about new technologies and evaluate countless options. For TV screens there's plasma, LCD, SXRD, LCoS, DLP, OLED, for TV signals there's analog, and 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i HDTV, for DVD's there's HD DVD and Blu-ray. I don't even want to get into the speakers, receivers and cables. This can prove challenging for the tech-savvy, let alone for the home theatre amateur -- which most women are. In fact, most of my friends would think "home theatre" refers to the theatre in your home town -- not your TV setup at home. 2) Women Care About Content When my now husband first met me, I had a 13-inch screen TV/VCR combo -- the same one I had in my dorm room in college. I would spend $300 on a pair of shoes, double that on a purse, but never once did it occur to me to buy a better television. On the one I had, I could watch Friends re-runs, ER, and a couple other shows I cared about. My friends too had no interest in TVs and speakers. In order to watch Sex and the City, we went to a local bar on Sunday nights -- that evidently was easier than getting cable (plus they had $5 cosmos). The point is, women care about content -- not picture and sound quality. 3) Social Comparison Doesn't Apply Women read Vogue, not Sound & Vision Magazine. They like to show off clothes, shoes, bags, and jewelry since these are status symbols that matter to them. Can you imagine a woman bragging to her friends about a new receiver or subwoofer? Enough said. 4) It's Expensive Even the women who understand technology and appreciate advantages of HDTV will most likely be deterred by the cost. One of my friends equated the $2,000 price of our TV cabinet to "2 good bags" declaring our purchase insane. A 60-inch plasma TV could cover a season's clothing budget. And in reality, it will depreciate at about the same rate. Women will convert consumer electronics prices into shoes and bags, while men will do the opposite. Each will think the other is crazy. It's easiest just to accept it. 5) The guys will figure it out Every smart girl, once it comes down to upgrading from the 13-inch TV, will find someone to figure it out. What are all the husbands, boyfriends and guy friends for if not to hook up your TV. We know guys will do it, so we don't have to. If you think this is unfair, remember that 47% of men's clothing is purchased by women* -- for the men who are at home watching TV. *Source:NPD Group Tatjana Mitchell Contributing Editor eCoustics.com |

Oh, how I hate sweeping generalizations! I'm a woman who has long been a huge music afficianado, and when I decided to upgrade my sound system recently I researched diligently on-line before purchasing my new receiver and speakers. And yes, I even hooked my system up myself. In the process I have learned a lot about audio and have become fascinated with the mechanics of sound. Oh yeah, I love shopping for electronics...and hate shopping for clothes. Perhaps a HDTV will be my next acquisition! |

Though this article may be on for a large number of women out there, in my experience the women around me love HD and flat panel TVs. Heck my mom purchased a 32" Sharp Aquos last year and she loves it. It seems like it may not occur to most women to buy a fancy TV but once they see the picture in HD then they understand. I do find it very true about woman not wanting to hook them up, I am always the tech support guy and I gladly help. We can't all be experts at everything! |

whether its a man/woman shopping for a good basic TV IMO most ppl just go to a showroom & whichever 1 shows & sounds the best & falls within a certain budget they just buy it without bothering about too much technical details ........ |

Great comical article My wife likes her audio and video equipment probably as much as her shoes and bags. She actually went to Italy and bought a set of Sonus Faber speakers because it sounded "romantic". Of course, she also bought shoes and bags |

A while back I was describing---ok, borderline bragging---to a friend about my new basement HT. Next thing I know his girlfriend launches into me about how ridiculous the whole thing was, a waste of space and money, yadda yadda. Admittedly, this irritated me. I assured her that it was my space, it was what I wanted and I worked hard for it. I also guaranteed that there was no scented candles, no mounds of useless pillows, no plants or flowers, no baskets, and especially no armoires hiding the 'ugly' TV, speakers, etc. Even though this discussion was all in good fun, it was all I could do to not sneer at her $1500 Prada handbag on her shoulder. And knowing her I can assure you this was no cheap knock-off. |

Generalizations are always dangerous but as others have suggested, expose the opposite sex to good audio and video and they soon get the picture!!! My wife has become so attuned to good sound and video now that she is a bigger critic than I am on programming. Just the other day I was channel surfing and stopped on the RAVE HD channel. My wife loved the video but the audio was severly compressed and she was the first to say, "This music station sucks. It sounds terrible. Are you sure this is HD?" She listens to more music now than we ever have before. Since we installed the system last year, her CD collection has doubled and our library of classic movies is also growing. There are several analogies one can draw from this article. Music can be like cars. For some, it is a way to get from point A to point B, and nothing more. For others, it is an experience to be enjoyed and whose performance is appreciated. Thanks ecousitcs for the opportunity for showing our home theater in the March edition of your sister publication, Audio Video Interiors!!!!! |
