Can I use 8 ohm speakers for a sytem that was designed for 4 ohm surround speakers.

Sure - although I wouldn't worry about this as no system is designed for 4 ohm loads. Some manufacturers use very dodgy power claims for their receivers by quoting their power output into 6 or 4 ohms loads. It's done simply to make it look like their amps are more powerful than they really are.

No worries - just decide whether your system choices sound good on music as well as movies.
