Using a 16:9 hdtv set for normal 16:9 and a prog scan dvd player set for 16:9 480p , We rented two movies, the first movie asked if you wanted full screen ( 4:3) or widescreen. We chose wide of course. The movie played filling the screen. The second movie had one format " widescreen" that movie played in letterbox style . I am perplexed!? |

I was perplexed by this the first time I saw it as well. So much so I thought my TV or DVD player was not working correctly. I went back to the store where I had bought them and the salesman showed me how some movies are filmed at an even wider format that 16:9, so they show as letterboxed even on a 16:9 screen. |

Don't be perplexed...there are other widescreen formats besides 16:9. http://hometheaterinfo.com/video1.htm I stopped trying to decipher them |

Thanks.......since then I found a setting on the DVD player that " auto " detects and sets the aspect to fill the screen if u want. Yes, many different formatts, I just would think that it would be prominently labled on the DVD which formatt it is. I HATE letterbox! |
