I've recently purchased an Energy Encore surround system and I'm running it on a Sony STR-DE945 receiver. I want to upgrade and I also wanted a better quality receiver. I'll be using it 90% for home theater use so that is my biggest concern. My budget is about $500. I've narrowed it down a little, any suggestions or experiences with these products would be very helpful. Denon avr 1804 Onkyo 601 Sony str DA2ES Yamaha RXV640 |

Of the brands listed I prefer the Onkyo. Sony and Yamaha are a non starter for me and my past experince with Denon was mixed at best. In this price range I would look at the NADt742, Pioneer 912, Elite vsx41 and Marantz 4300. These and the Onkyo I feel would be a better list to choose from. Good luck. |

Though I own 2 Denons, I would recommend the Onkyo 601. It provides the best balance of features and sonic ability IMHO. |

I would stay away from the Sony and the Yamaha. The Encore is a rather "brash" sounding speaker system and the sony and Yamaha receivers would only exacerbate this sonic tendency. I would suggest the Onkyo or the Denon as better choices. |
