I was wondering how useful one of these discs would be for someone like me who only has a $500 system? Also has anyone tried the bestbuy version? If I get Digital Video Essentials I think I'll have to order it off the interent, vs the best buy one I can pick up tommarow. The guy I talked to said it was best buy's own disc so I'm curious if it's any good? |

I don't have Digital Video Essentials. I am waiting for it to come to a Best Buy of Borders so I can go pick it up. I have the older Avia DVD, similar to the original Video Essentials.
These disks can be VERY usefull. There are tests to set black and white levels, sharpness, color levels, tint, geometry and about 50 audio tests. It can help you set up your sub, test individual speakers one at a time. Most people listen to Dolby Pro Logic or Dolby Digital 2.0 and don't know it (The Fifth Element comes to mind). These disks will help you set up your DVD player and receiver so that you know the real thing when you see/hear it.

Thanks alot derek. I think I'll order DVE instead of picking up the bestbuy version. The review I read of it that got me thinking was here,

Looks like my local Barnes and Nobles had it but are out of stock, and the guy I talked to at bestbuy made it seem as if they wouldn't ever get it because they make their own. |

thanks, I got it at a barnes and nobles across town. I didn't want to order it online as I've had my HTB for 2 weeks now and still haven't been able to use it do to things like the tv blowing a fuse. So I didn't want to wait 5-10 days or whatever for it to come in. |

I just picked my copy up from a Barns & Nobles. Amazingly about 10% of the disk looks as good as HDTV. I know it was authored that way but I am supprised that kind of detail is coming off of a DVD. It's a little hard to navigate though. The DVD produces a constant 9.2 Mbps throughput! |
