Could anybody tell me where to find a diagram that could show me how to connect up the cables correctly for a tv, vcr, digital satellite and hi-fi.

The manuals should tell you. If not, this is a good page. It is in Europe/UK, the terminology is not exactly the same as North America, but the principles are the same.
