Hi there
I have an old Sony DAV-S880 (still working well) & i'm looking to add BluRay. Can i simply hook up to the DAV-S through a component or }optical cable & still achieve surround sound?

Yes, all you need to do is connect the Blu-ray player's optical output into the Sony's optical input. You will get surround sound from any Blu-ray disc.
