Hi I was given this sub by a friend, it only came with the sub and power cord. I'm not familiar with subs at all and didn't know if my best bet was to buy a line in/out cable and connect it directly to my reciever. It seems the logical action but I was thrown off by the in and out (red and black)speaker terminals. Do I hook up any of my other speakers to the sub? I have surround sound now and am just adding the sub. Thanks!!!

The sub has all of the connections simply to be versatile and it often gives folks the idea that you have to use them all or you are doing something wrong. In other words, good question and you are not alone!!!

So the answer is, you only need one line in as you suspect and generally people use the red or right input. The work comes in tuning it and perhaps this could be of some help:

Jim why the right and not the left or a "Y" splitter.

Technically this sub and many others have two very different "inputs" and ways of connection to an amplifier. Input one would be the "line in" looking for an LFE (Low Frequency Effects), "Sub Out" or other unamplified signal generally from a surround sound system.
The second "input", not to be used at the same time, would be the speaker level connectors generally used with a two channel or stereo only system.

You could use a Y splitter on the line input if you want to but you could also argue that it is actually detrimental in that there is absolutely no way to make any improvement but you could actually lose via resistance through the additional connectors.

Regarding the left or right input, it really doesn't matter but it is generally easier to tell people to use the right (flip a coin).
