Hi I'm definitly not a stereo genius so I could use a little input. I have a Kenwood VR407 and I currently have some bose bookshelf speakers and a pair of jbl front speakers (not sure what model) Could anyone recommend a subwoofer for me? Thanks

Greetings,

Several factors are going to come into play to determine the best sub for you.

Things to consider:
What you will be listening to most often
How critical a listener you are
Room size
Room treatments (carpeting, furnishings, whats hanging on the wall, etc.)
And mostly, how much do you want to thump???

Hi Jim,

It is to be used for tv/movies only, not all that critical of a listener, just looking to give movies a better thump. It's an average sized room, just the basics...and all the kids junk of course. I'm not looking for top of the line just something to bring more out of the movies we watch. I think my big problem is I'm not sure what is compatible with my receiver, and I didn't know if I should be looking into just buying a boxed system.

Thanks

Your receiver has a subwoofer output ready for a powered sub so you should be set for a huge variety of brands, sizes, and wattage. I would suspect though that something even as basic as Polk's PSW-10

http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-10-Inch-Monitor-Subwoofer/dp/B0002KVQBA/ref=sr_ 1_1?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1236020169&sr=1-1

to JBL's entry level sub:

http://www.amazon.com/JBL-Balboa-100%252dWatt-Subwoofer-10%2522/dp/B000O8WE66/re f=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1236020276&sr=1-19

to almost anything on this page:

http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1236020425/ref=sr_st?keywords=Home+Powered+Subwoofer &rs=1065836&page=1&rh=n%3A1065836%2Ck%3AHome+Powered+Subwoofer&sort=price

will all make you wonder why you never had a sub before. As long as it says powered or active and it is a name you actually have heard before I would say you would be happy with it installed in this system.

Of course the eventual goal would be to one day give this system to one of your children and, say in year or two, post another question asking what whole system for around $2000.00 should you be looking at. Then we will know you are hooked like the rest of us
