We have six Samsung surround sound speakers (1 subwoofer, 1 center, and four small wall mount) from a home theatre in a box system purchased at Costco many years ago. The Samsung DVD/Receiver unit died a while ago. How can our speakers be connected to the equipment we now have (an old Sony Trinitron 27-inch TV and a Sony DVD/VCR SLV-281P?

They CAN NOT hook upto the equipment you have. Speakers hook up to a receiver and not to a DVD/VCR or TV. The speakers from your old Samsung are the weak link of your old system. You could hook them up to a new receiver ($200 - up) but they really should be upgraded also.
