Can I hook up my CD player directly to the home theater system or do I need a tuner?

A tuner is actually the component that receives radio signals. In the context of a home theater system, you would connect the CD player to your A/V receiver. The A/V receiver is actually a combination of the functions of a pre-amplifier, an amplifier, and a tuner.
