I'm trying to decide which HTiB system to invest in - the Samsung HT-DB600 or the Toshiba SD-43HT?
If anyone had any input, I would appreciate it. They are about identical in price and features. I own a Samsung HDTV, so I am leaning towards the Samsung. Does anyone have any experience with the Toshisba SD-43HT? |

Purchased the "toshiba htib" this past weekend.
It is my first "htib" (and if everything goes well, the last).
PROS: - integrated DVD/Receiver
- progressive scan capability
- DD/DTS/DPLII
- ability to change speaker delay
(ie. speakers placed in LARGE LR 10-15 feet
from the tv in the corner)
- inputs/output galore ...
- color coding for speakers is simply
"plug and play" for a novice like me.
- viewed jpegs off dvd from different region
(ie. htib in reg. 1 while dvd jpgs from asia - a problem on my older dvd player unable to read)
- mp3/wma playback from cd-r (need to test as yet)
CONS: - remote not 'backlit'
- no memory function to store specific settings for watching different types of dvds ..
(cinema setting for movies , concert hall for music concert etc)
- power output not adequate ?
(ie. to my novice ears, the 320 watts
is good enough - i don't want to
be deaf)
I had to look through my dvd boxed sets to "sound check" the system.
Older movies ... die hard trilogy,
tom clancy boxed set
(without 'sum of all fears')
jurassic park 1 & 2
independence day
On some older movies, i found that i had to increase the default volume setting even higher than the other movies. Hearing a torpedo coming at
you from behind from the left all the way to "whizzing" by you is PHENOMENAL.
Present movies ... tears of the sun (bruce willis)
Only a minimal increase in volume, you are good to go !! The distinctive sound of rain as it hits leaves in the "african forest" can clearly be heard. All this from a VHS tape even ! Can't wait
to watch the DVD version of current/new releases.
I am inclined towards "big, loud explosions" but
how else can you test a "home theater" ?
Sometimes what you hear at the "store" when comparing the sound might just be "tweaked" to the
store's setting/surroundings.
It depends on your criteria for an HTIB. I like the slim design and integration for one, the volume is certainly adequate for my listening preference. I have it connected by s-video but now
i am looking to purchase "component video" cables
to obtain the best video possible.
Except for the "cable box" all other connected sources are "toshiba".
Connection configuration:
27" TV - s-video (re-connecting with component)
VCR - composite (better with s-video)
CABLE BOX - ("digital tv" take advantage of
'optical/digital' connectivity)
