I have spoken to a few "Professionals" who have told me that HDMI will NOT carry surround sound. They have told me I have to connect digital audio cables to carry the surround sound signal. Naturally others say that HDMI will carry it. What is up with this??????

Depends on the receiver. Top of the line Pioneer elite model 84txsi does procces all signal sent via HDMI but the 82tx model only pases video signal through to TV. Denon model pass only the video but the new ones due in jul 07 will procces full audio signal.
