Y is black/white
Pb is blue
Pr is red

If your picture is black then maybe your either have inputs connected wrong or the wires maybe loose. Also check that the settings are for 16x9 widescreen in the dvd player along with the component setting.

Check if your TV is set to accept progressive scan or interlaced signals...check the dvd player as well if it is progressive scan capable. Their signals should match.

Another thing to check...your video cables. Remove them one at a time and see if the color changes on the screen. This will rule out the cables at fault.

Seems like your cables are at fault. You should see a picture even with only 1 cable plugged in.

No, Berny there would not be a picture if he unplugged the green (black/white ) cable out. That removes the slate for the red and blue to work off of. That's why the pic went black and white when he pulled out the red and blue. To me, and I am not familiar with the UK's system for HD, it sounds like the TV has a problem with either the HZ the picture is being displayed at, or the signal itself is not supported. Good luck and have a chat with someone who is knowledgeable in the UK about this stuff. Maybe salesman or tech shop.
