I have a Pioneer reciever, not sure what model number and an array of different speakers including 2 Boston Accustic floor speakers and all speakers from a seperate Sony suround sound system(2 bookshelf, 5 tweeters and a center. I understand that bc I have basic cable there is no surround signal coming in but whay dont all the speakers work when I have the cable on? I have my laptop hooked to the receiver and when I play music all the speakers work. The suround sound does not work when I put a DVD in and only the front 2(the BA's) work during regular cable watching. Someone please help me...

Is the receiver set to accept surround sound signals, i.e., digital optical or coaxial digital or even multiple channel analog. How is the DVD player connected?
