I am new here as of today, I am sure this same question has been asked a billion times, but which are the best 5.1 and 6.1 speaker systems for the cheapest, which can handle 100wrms (happily)? Most likely being powered by an Onkyo rcvr. producing 100rms or a tad more.

What's your definition of cheap?

And by the way, unless your Onkyo was close to a grand, there is no way it's pushing 100 RMS Watts Per Channel (WPC). Your Onkyo is probably pushing around 50 rms wpc +/- 10, all speakers driven.

Most receivers are rated 1-channel driven at like 10khz. The only "mainstream" receivers that actually deliver the watts they claim are Harman Kardon and that's why they look so underpowered on paper.

As for a bang for the buck speaker system, name a budget.

At the very low end for price, Circut City had some Pioneer bookshelfs on for $10/each last week.

So $60 for six bookshelfs.
For a cheap sub that has good reviews for the price:

So $150 and some shipping...$180 if that + $60 for a grand total of $240ish, but wait, we need speaker wire and a sub cable. Monoprice.com has that for cheap, add another $10-15 and your set. So, for less than $300 you have an okay surround set-up.

But the sweet spot for a set up is probably around $1,500.

-CMT-340 SE Mains
-CMT-340 SE Center
-CBM-170 SE Surrounds
Add an SVS PB-10 subwoofer

And you'll have near audiophile sound.

But then you would realize you need a better receiver or power amp, and you'd want a DVD-Audio player to really hear what system is capable of, etc, etc. It can be an expensive hobby.

So there you have it. $300 well get you something basic, while $1,500 will get you something phenomenal. And there is plenty in between.
