Any tips on how to set up a rec'vr, set box, TV, etc up. Then manuel does me no good. I am in a mess of wires

SO I tried to post pics but that failed- Majority of my cables are the red/white and copper ended ones that plug into something, Everything has the option of digital COAX- The first set up was everything running primarily to the VCR and then I upgraded the receiver so that I could have a direct line to the sub versus all the criss crossing. The satelite box uses needle type connection and I see nothing on the rec'vr that would allow you to go to the rec'vr with that connection- then again maybe its common knowledge that the satelite box never goes straight to the rec'vr but somewhere else? The rec'vr also allows for component connections and DVD 5.1 Chan input
